Proud of my store

Celebrating stores, retail staff empowerment and why you can say…
I’m #ProudOfMyStore.

Everyday millions of customer and brand interactions happen both physically and digitally, each one just as valuable as the next. We want to celebrate the retail stores who believe that every piece of customer feedback matters and are empowering staff to become customer-obsessed.

What retail stores and frontline staff have achieved over the past 12 months is incredible – and at Critizr, we believe this should be celebrated. That’s why we’ve introduced the ProudOfMyStore initiative. A chance for stores up and down the country to share why they are proud and compete to be chosen the winning store in our by our panel of retail experts. From Grocers and Fashion stores, to banks and restaurants, we want to hear from you all.

[Competition now closed]

Monthly winner prize: Ben’s luxury cookies for the whole team & a £100 donation to your store’s chosen charity

Overall winner prize (Selected from our monthly winners): A luxury hamper for the whole team to share, an additional donation of £300 to your store’s chosen charity and the title of becoming the ‘Proudest Store’ in the UK.

Our competition is now closed but you can still celebrate your store and tell the story of why you are proud here!

Because we have worked right through the Pandemic since last year, we have reached out to the community asked what they needed and followed through to help them. This has included doorstep deliveries for the elderly and isolating to making up food bags for the food banks, we have also reached out to schools and nurseries with activity packs and sunflower seeds in a project called Seeds of Hope which has kept them all involved and it has been great seeing the progress with the sunflowers growing and blooming. It has brought the community together. We have also done fundraising for Clic Sargent, Erskine Soldiers Home and Strathcarron Hospice.

The Village Store Sandyballs, Fordingbridge

During the various lockdowns throughout the pandemic we were able to keep the Village Store open despite it being on a holiday park that was closed to visiting guests due to our desire to support our permanent residents. We have over 70 permanent residents on site, most of whom are elderly and as such were reluctant to loeave the site for fear of exposing themselves to the virus. We were able to provide a solution where residents could go somewhere on their doorstep to not only buy their essentials but be able to connect on a daily basis with others from outside their home. For the most vulnerable of our residents we were able to provide a self-managed delivery service and we still continue this so that these residents still do not have to worry about coming into contact with the large numbers of people we still have visiting the site. Our residents are very important to us and as so many of them remain regular customers (especially for newspapers in the morning) we enjoy being able to spend a couple of minutes with them, listening to their hopes & fears and looking as to how we can support them moving forwards.

Director/ Estimator/ Installer Neil stepped up and logged over a whopping 300 hours of volunteering in 2020.
Director/ Sales Manager Maxine, working with their local volunteer horticultural society, tried to ensure people could access compost, gardening equipment etc, to best spend their enforced leisure time and “Boris Hour” where possible, making sure anyone who felt lonely had someone somewhere to reach out to.

Going through the costa 50p events whilst on limited numbers and staff in store, serving over 1300 customers per 50p promotion, some staff on their first shift.
Putting their own safety at risk during peak times of the virus to ensure that customers are served and doing it with a smile.
Moving to new delivery channels to adapt to the way our customers are ordering and still ensuring all standards are met.
Having to meet Covid checks by cleaning all touchpoints at 30 minute intervalls whilst maintaing all social distancing guidelines.
Moving to dine in and increasing numbers but still on limited staff to ensure all social distancing measures are met whilst behind the servery has meant working harder than ever before and not mentioning that the air con is only just being fixed over a year later due to covid measures, working through heatwaves and cold winters.
My team are pure winners in my eyes ❤

Royal Voluntary Service Café and Shop, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

Royal Voluntary Service Café and Shop, Clatterbridge Cancer Centre

Royal Voluntary Service has been an integral part of Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Wirral, for over 20 years, operating two cafes and a shop on the site. At the start of the pandemic in March 2020, the site’s Service Manager, Debbie Morris, asked the Trust if the charity’s service could remain open and continue to provide the much-needed service at the centre. As there are no other service providers nearby, the team felt strongly that they did not want to leave the centre’s staff and patients wanting at a time of great need.

In a matter of days, manager Debbie, Service Assistants Patricia Black and Ben Morris, along with some fantastic support from the Trust’s Services Contract Manager, we were overjoyed to be able to adjust our services to become Covid safe in order to continue to support the NHS and the community. The unit has remained open for the full duration of the pandemic and remains a valuable part of the centre to staff and patients alike.

Whilst adjusting our main outpatients’ retail unit to ensure it was Covid safe, we also thought in-depth of ways to be able to support the medical staff whilst they worked on the Covid wards. Many of the staff were not able to leave their allocated wards for up to 12 hours. A simple menu was designed to allow staff to pre-order their breakfasts and lunches to be delivered to the wards safely. It was important to us to ensure that the hardworking, remarkable NHS staff in the centre were looked after, and our principal Royal Voluntary Service Stella Values were fulfilled.

The Clatterbridge Unit still thrives to offer an invaluable service in what can only be described as a community of staff, patients and visitors, growing in strength every day .

Passion and determination were the two dominant driving traits in our mission to support this community within the Cancer Centre. I am hugely proud of my staff and my store at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre Royal Voluntary Service.

Royal Voluntary Service Café and Shop, Macclesfield

Royal Voluntary Service Café and Shop, Macclesfield

Royal Voluntary Service’s Macclesfield Café and Shop has been proudly serving staff and patients at Macclesfield District General Hospital with comforting hot drinks and nourishing food for over 15 years.

At the start of the pandemic the Hospital Trust, its staff and patients were really needing our support, and so we chose to stay open when other retail outlets in the hospital were closing. We reviewed our service and knew that it wouldn’t be straightforward, but that we had to do it.

We transformed our café into a safe shop/café unit, we also had a hot drink and fresh sandwich vending machine installed, to ensure that NHS staff and patients could buy what they needed at anytime, day or night. At the height of the pandemic, we were Covid-secure, to protect everybody.

Life in the hospital became very different and we had to adapt quickly, we made disposable menus so that staff could pre-order their breakfast and lunch, which we would then deliver safely to their wards. We had food orders for different departments all over the hospital and would happily adapt our menu to meet their sometimes very strange requests, which always gave us a giggle!! We would often get an early morning or late evening knock at the door whilst we were closed, as staff knew, and still know that we will always be there to serve them whilst we’re in the building.

As we could see how hard they were working, we did our very best to constantly make staff feel welcome and at every opportunity we would try to cheer them up and make them smile, the free donations helped! From giving them fresh fruit & vegetables or crisps & drinks, to the free cookies on a Friday – which were always guaranteed to make them smile!

We are really proud of what we have achieved during the pandemic as a team, we have worked hard and adapted where we needed to, to show Royal Voluntary Service, hospital staff and patients, our trust, loyalty and compassion, always with a smile and a positive sense of humour.

This is exactly why I am so very proud of Royal Voluntary Service, Macclesfield.

Apart from dealing with the changes brought about by the virus our store has taken everything that has been thrown at us in our stride. We have had many ups and downs but stuck together through it all and had a sing and dance along the way.

We always put ourselves out there with incentive drives and shout about how well each other are doing and I am so proud that we always celebrate each other successes.

This vibe extends to our customers/clients and when they walk through our doors we make sure we make them and their pets part of out family too! We have our regulars who know all our names and we also manage to find new family members who have never owned a pet before.

We were bursting with pride and what we have accomplished that we entered into an internal store of the year competition and managed to secure a place with the top 1% of all stores throughout the company.

Craft Coop Windsor, Windsor

Craft Coop Windsor, Windsor

The Craft Coop is an award-winning social enterprise concept that allows local makers to sell their handmade products in a nurturing high street retail environment. Prior to COVID, there were 3 stores – our ‘flagship’ (OG) in Maidenhead, in addition to High Wycombe and Camberley.

We had wanted to open a new store in Windsor for some time, but negotiations were stalled in the initial lockdown during the pandemic. Realising that more and more people were recognising the benefits of ‘locally produced’ goods – and some were even honing their artistic skills (and even pivoting) during later lockdowns – we persisted in our discussions with local supporters – with town centre manager, councillors and, most importantly, Windsor Yards shopping centre to agree on some space for a pop-up this year.

We were delighted to be provided space in an empty retail unit – which needed a little TLC – so we rallied friends and family to help paint and prepare it, in a socially distanced and safe manner. As a registered CIC, we do not have much in the way of spare funds, but through the generosity of the shopping centre and local supporters, we managed to up- and recycle existing fixtures and fittings from other disused premises and make our new retail space look like a ‘gallery’!

In parallel, we set about recruiting artisans and makers to help fill the space and sell their products in the shop. Previously this has been managed via a series of Open Calls (almost X Factor style!) in person, but instead we met all our new ‘Coopers’ over zoom to discuss their products and skills – ensuring too quality variety – from paintings, photography and homewares (ceramics, textiles, candles etc), to jewellery, accessories and clothing.

We provided socially distanced training – and on 12 April we opened our doors for the first time. As part of our business model, the Coopers all need to work one shift a week in the store – meaning they get a chance to meet like-minded craft-passionate folk in a safe, nurturing environment. They also get to know one another’s products and can talk to customers about the maker’s background and product range – which often in turn encourages commissioned work.

Since then we have grown an even bigger community, along with supporters from the general public – reflected by our ever growing social media presences. We’ve become a collection point for a local family-related charity ‘The Baby Bank’ and also chose the ‘Windsor Homeless Project’ as our charity for 2021 – which will receive proceeds from any events we do, plus our honesty coffee pot. We have a community noticeboard where anyone can pin updates – for example Windsor Community Fridge etc, and even have a stuffed dog called ‘Cooper’!

We are delighted with the progress we have made, despite the adversity of starting a new operation in a pandemic, with a load of people that didn’t necessarily know one another, and not much in the way of funds – but with oodles of passion and a local mindset!

We believe its a win-win for all – we have a beautiful new shop, artisans and makers can sell their wares, and hopefully the wider Windsor community (in addition to the shopping centre) appreciate the vibrancy of having us there too!

Following hearing the news that one of our little customers, Jordan Banks, was tragically killed by getting hit by lightning whilst playing football, my team at Sports Direct Blackpool were keen to see what could be done to show our love and support to the family.

We took it upon ourselves at a store level to offer out free shirt printing of JORDAN 7 on anyone’s football shirt as the town came together to honour Jordan whether it was standing down the promenade during a 2hr memorial convoy, schools did numerous events which allowed children to wear Jordan 7 which we supplied, and we organised charity buckets that raised money for the children’s hospice that supported Jordan’s family after his death.

The team did over 150 shirt prints of Jordan 7, offered out multiple discounts and also made donations. I’m incredibly proud of my team for coming together, thinking of new ideas and the selfless acts I saw from each staff member.

We put the customer at the heart of everything we do. We have not been trading for long since October last year but have built up a great relationship with our customers. We listen to their comments, we action their requests where possible and we greet them all with a smile and a warm welcome to the store. we have regular range reviews in conjunction with what customers are saying. The store is constantly evolving and changing.

If they need assistance we gladly help whether that be helping them to find something or taking their shopping to their car we will gladly do that. We have also delivered customers shopping where feasible. We like to think we have made their day a little easier. We are aware that for some elderly customers we will be the only people that they have contact with – so we go that extra mile if they just want a chat and giggle.

Our Deli counter is on hand to help with any requests i.e. a special pizza, a special sandwich, wrap or bap if we can help then we will!

Our team has been brilliant through lockdowns with cleaning, disinfecting and adhering to policies within the store and they have done it all with a happy disposition and a smile (although no one see’s that with the masks)

We do regular updates on Facebook and have run a fun day in conjunction with the Children’s Air Ambulance. Christmas we had find the elf for the kids within the store which proved to be a big hit with children and parents alike. Easter we ran a coloring competition for the kids which again was very popular. Events like these will continue within the store throughout the year.

We are all very proud of our store!!

I am truly proud of my store and in particular my team.

Despite working through a global pandemic, we have also had to sadly relocate our premises and all go through a lengthy consultation process, yet despite the uncertainty and these challenging times, all team members have remained positive, committed and determined.

I have been blown away by their support in setting up and opening our new store and I’m extremely excited to hear our customers feedback and how we can best serve their needs.

All of the team continue to contribute ideas and support each other. For this we refer to ourselves as a family rather and for that I’m proud and I genuinely don’t think I could ask for a more engaged team.

They really know how to make a difference and I think this drives their engagement which translates to our customers snd their experience.

During the pandemic we had to turn our business model upside down from predominately food wholesalers to a full online shopping site. Going from 40 to 150 online deliveries a day. The staff worked long hours to ensure delivery to the most vulnerable on the island. We took on redundant hospitality staff who would have been out of a job otherwise some of whom like it so much they are still with us now.

From keeping them safe by being covid secure, going around the store with them helping with their shopping lists, showing them how things work or just having a little chat when they pop in to make sure they are OK and know they aren’t alone. Our store isn’t just a shop it’s a little community hub where everyone is welcome and we all look after each other.

I came to this store after they had a particularly tough time with a CVA. The moral was low. We stayed upbeat had a fantastic Christmas 2019 lots of team engagement & positivity to be had.

4 months later our world as we knew it goes into a pandemic 2020. 1 year on after 6 months in & out of closure.
This team has come back fighting. The support we have for one another, their drive to want us to succeed & their ambition to support our local community is inspiring.

We are trying to a truly local store. Linking with our stores chosen charity (new beginnings – homeless charity), holding events for old age ranges most weeks & supporting small businesses on Instagram.

I’m excited for our future & know i now have a team here set to take Reading by storm.

I am super proud of my store, and more importantly my team, because of the complete transformation we have had over one of the most challenging times for retail as an industry. I joined the store in October ‘20 and began setting out a framework for achieving every day and making each day count.

I am so grateful for all the hard work everybody has put in to make sure we are constantly striving to hit targets and staying on top, no matter what’s thrown at us.

Through lockdown after lockdown, everyone has stayed so proud of our store and it shows from selling the most markdown stock on the first day of reopening to our new footwear department.

We are on an upwards positive trajectory and I couldn’t be more proud of not only the work that is going on within store, but also how we are getting involved with the company, pride campaigns and community projects.

I could not be more proud of my team here in Banbridge but a special mention to my Supervisor Danielle who went over and above with a customer this week.

Danielle had by chance got a couple of calls from a customer who was enquiring via telephone about different skirts we had in store, she told the customer that they could come in and see the skirts or download our new look app to explore a bigger range and have them delivered to the store for free should they have had any concerns leaving the house during these strange times. The customer then on the third phone call confided in Danielle that they were currently in the transitioning stage of one gender to another and that they were really anxious about coming to any store to try on clothes. Danielle immediately used her natural caring, considerate nature and explained to the customer that she would meet them at the door at a set time and walk the floor with them as a companion to select items, she had a fitting room reserved for the customer and told the customer she would wait for them to try on and then offer her opinion and help select the products. 100% assured the customer that our store is a safe space and that if ever they need to come In and have anxiety to ring ahead and she would be a go to member of the team until they were fully comfortable with all the team.

Never in my life have I came across such an excellent service being provided and what’s more it all came naturally to Danielle to think outside the box and go that extra mile for a customer who had concerns coming to the store

I could not be more proud of this amazing gesture and that the customer was able to overcome their fear of visiting us whilst going through a challenging time in their life.

Just a few of our memorable moments:

We have a customer called Anne. She came in every season for must-haves picked by Serena.
Styled and fitted for her. Anne only came in once by off chance loved the service then this was the result.

Knowing the C&C customer’s by their names when they enter the stores so we can grab before they ask.

Louise needed help with denim before lockdown. Was helped with this and since then she trusts the team and comes in for different ideas.

Now stocking Apricot we have identified customers that we will know will love this. Whether it’s the style or even just the colour. Resulting in us outperforming our region.

The rest is what I call the basics – always a good morning, thank you . With a little bit of banter.
We pride our store on what’s separates us is our personalities and the vibe in store.

Royal Voluntary Service Manchester Royal Infirmary

Royal Voluntary Service Manchester Royal Infirmary

We have operated retail at the Manchester Royal Infirmary Outpatients Café for a number of years. During the pandemic we were asked by the hospital trust to close our unit as they were in desperate need for additional clinical space. Whilst disappointed to close we knew it was important to support the NHS and our community in this way.
We then looked at other ways of supporting the staff and visitors at the hospital at this time and discovered a disused area in the hospital that we thought we could turn into an RVS “pop up” café. In a matter of weeks, with the help of service assistants Julie and Lynsey and some great support from the hospital estates team we had converted a disused space into a fully formed, covid-19 secure and safe tea bar in the hospitals Peter Mount Building. Again, allowing us to support and serve the NHS staff, patients and visitors at this terrible time and allow, once again for our volunteers to return to do what they do best.
The Peter Mount Unit has been a real success and continues to grow each week and has proven to be a real success story.

Hard work, drive and determination to support their hospital, that is why I am proud of my store at the RVS Peter Mount, Manchester Royal Infirmary.

I am proud of my store and amazing team because we all work hard. Everyone gets on so well with each other it’s the first thing anyone who’s comes to our store notices. I believe that’s because we enjoy what we do and all pull together to not only get the days task done but to succeed in going above and beyond. It’s a joy to hear from customers who regularly come in and make the effort to let us know that they love coming in as we brighten their day. My personal favourites are when we seen people multiple times a well as they’ve now made it part of there walk with the dogs as they too love visiting! (Thou that might be because they know we cant resist giving them some free cuddles and scratches) I feel extremely lucky to be working in my store and to be supported and given opportunities that I have received as it allows me and my colleagues to grow as people.

I have a great team who over this past year we have grown even closer together. I am so proud to call them my team and even more so they are my work family that I know I can turn to.
We all work well together and know our strengths and weaknesses, so we can support each other when needed.

My team have been incredibly strong over the past year. We have been open throughout the whole pandemic and tackled so many obstacles along the way. They have stuck together and bonded amazingly. Making sure everyone is coping well with the challenges we face as a team serving our customers every day through the Covid pandemic. We are like a family and the past year has shown that through and through with the support we give each other to ensure our wellbeing is in a good place. We have delivered exceptional customer service standards every day, helping to feed and look after our nations pets.
